section of piece that extends a bit more to the right. painted on spring break, when the campus was empty and I stayed behind to enjoy the solitude. painting preceded a series of images that were entirely red with white and black details.
this image was an experiment with shadows and depth.
subject matter? i saw it as a collection of dead bugs mysteriously lifting off from the ground and floating away. others have seen it as the large black beetle (whose texturing i love) performsing as a king or priest to the rest of the bugs... but the curled legs and ladybugs with partially extended wings indicate dead poses of bugs. i like both interpretations, though.
